Direct Service Volunteer Opportunities
(Must be at least 16 years old)
____Administrative Office Volunteer - Answer the crisis hotline, direct calls to appropriate staff, monitor security cameras, allow entry for appointments, assist with auditing files, and support other administrative tasks as needed. Shifts are available in 2-hour increments between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. on weekdays.
____Child Care Volunteer - Assist staff by implementing play strategies with children ranging from infants to teenagers. Available shifts are on Monday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m, and some Tuesdays from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m.
____Grocery Shopping Volunteer - Assist with weekly grocery shopping for SafeHomes' shelter every other Wednesday morning. Responsibilities include picking up the grocery list, Sam’s Club card, and SafeHomes-issued check from the administrative office, shopping at Sam’s Club, and paying for the items with the provided check. Afterward, deliver and unload the groceries into the shelter kitchen and pantry. This role requires the ability to bend, push, lift, and carry bulk grocery items. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and access to a large vehicle capable of transporting a substantial load. Availability is required on Wednesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.
____Donation Day Volunteer – Support SafeHomes’ bi-monthly Donation Days, held on the first Tuesday of each month at Aldersgate and the third Tuesday at Abilene. Responsibilities include staffing the donation drop-off site, assisting donors with completing tax receipts, and helping unload and organize donated items into the designated storage unit. Volunteers at Abilene must pick up supplies from the administrative office before the event and return them afterward. This role requires the ability to bend, lift, and carry items of various sizes and weights. Volunteers must have a valid driver’s license and access to a vehicle capable of transporting donation materials. Availability is required on the first Tuesday (Aldersgate) or third Tuesday (Abilene) of each month from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
____ Compassionate Cook/Caterer – Prepare and deliver a warm, hearty meal to SafeHomes. Cook or cater the main dish and sides for approximately 20 people, ensuring that meals do not include pork, shellfish, or nuts. Meals should be prepared in disposable dishes and delivered hot by the designated drop-off time. All necessary utensils and silverware will be provided by SafeHomes. Meals must be dropped off on Mondays at 5:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m.
____ Storage Shopper - Fulfills client storage requests by retrieving needed items from the storage unit and transporting them back to the shelter or administrative office. Volunteers will coordinate with staff to identify specific needs and ensure timely and accurate delivery of requested items. This role requires the ability to lift and carry boxes or individual items of varying sizes. Volunteers must have reliable transportation and be available weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
____ Storage Unit Assistant - Helps process and organize items received during SafeHomes’ Donation Days by sorting and placing donations in appropriate locations. Responsibilities include shelving usable items in the storage unit and placing non-essential or overflow items into designated blue Goodwill bins for further processing. Volunteers must be able to bend, lift, and carry boxes of various sizes and weights. This position requires availability weekdays between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.. ____Community Outreach Volunteer – Represents SafeHomes at outreach events by sharing information about the agency’s programs and services with the public. Responsibilities include picking up outreach supplies from the administrative office, setting up a table at the event with SafeHomes materials, and engaging with attendees to answer questions and raise awareness. After the event, volunteers must clean up and return all supplies to SafeHomes. Opportunities are available at least once per month and may occur during daytime, evening, or weekend hours. Volunteers should be comfortable speaking with the public and representing SafeHomes in a professional and respectful manner.
____ Helping Hands at Events - Provides support during SafeHomes’ fundraising and community events, including FITMI (January), Motown (February), and DVAM (October). Responsibilities include assisting with event setup and breakdown, greeting and directing guests, donors, or vendors, and providing support at registration tables, raffle stations, or donation areas. Additional tasks may include decorating event spaces, organizing materials, distributing promotional items, and offering general on-site assistance to SafeHomes staff.
